He said that I don't have to do it in release order but doing it in release order can reduce the chance of problems later. That is because I was told to do that by someone here in Australia who was an EA employee and he actually emailed me the release order. I also always install in release order if I'm doing a complete new install. That is what I do and I've never had a problem. But I always tell people to say yes if asked if they want to patch after installing an expansion. I don't actually know if this is the cause of the problem.
